Ranking the natures of mind

We go through various mental states in our life. While we may go through a certain mental condition only once, others may be experienced repeatedly. I have been studying about how all mental states can be examined since a long time. In this process, while I have noticed that even freedom or hope is just a fantasy, I have reached the top of enlightenment. Indeed, the appearance of the lower bound can be well understood, by climbing to the top of the mountain. The Emotion Control Theory and the Formation Theory of Psychic Phenomena represent my process of awareness.

I was able to successfully derive a holistic picture of various psychic phenomena, and specify the location of each nature of mind, depending on their regulatory states. This can be used as a standard to establish each position. I have already indicated the definition other regulatory states. The various natures of mind can be ranked according to the mental condition. This enables us to grasp the location of the natures of mind, that we experience. In the present paper, I have described ten phases of mental states. These mental states can occur even if an individual usually acts in the regulatory states. Many individuals would posses some of the mental states described below. It is therefore important to understand where these mental states are located.

                                                                   Ranking the natures of mind

First level: Objectification of self + direct restraint upon the displeasing factor, Objectification of self + the route of changing displeasure into pleasure

The interlocking movements among the displeasing factors have the objectification of self ("weak self→weak object" and "bad self→bad object") and the subjectivization of object ("weak sekf←weak object" and "bad self←bad object"). These interlocking movement always occur with the "fragmented self (self-defensive factor→self-displeasing factor)" or the "divided object (object-defensive factor→object-displeasing factor)." Further, the fragmented self is liable to cause the "perceptualization of concepts," and the divided object is liable to cause "wisdom." The neural transmission in the former situation is  represented as follows: self-defensive factor→self-displeasing factor→thinking system→perception system→object-displeasing factor. On the other hand, the neural transmission in the latter situation is represented in the following way: object-defensive factor→object-displeasing factor→perception system→thinking system→self-displeasing factor. These series of psychodynamics indicate the interlocking movements among the displeasing factors.

In the regulatory states, even if self-dissociation occurs, the object-regulatory factor and the self-regulatory factor, which restrain self-dissociation, can work. In other words, the loop of help and the loop of forgiveness can be used in the regulatory states. However, when an individual entirely attains enlightenment so as to lose freedom and hope, it is difficult for him/her to activate the object-regulatory factors (the idealized object and the apologetic object), which restrain the self-displeasing factor activated by self-dissociation. Then, he/she enables the objectification of self by using the interlocking movements among the displeasing factors, and restrains the activated object-displeasing factor by the self-regulatory factors (the grandiose self and the rebellious self). Whereas, when object dissociation occurs, the subjectivization of object is generated by the interlocking movements among the displeasing factors. However, the self-displeasing factor activated by the subjectivization of object is hard to be restrained by the object-regulatory factors and the self-regulatory factors, and it is rather liable to be defended by the self-defensive factors. This is an important characteristic of the neural transmissions. In such situations, the flow of thought has already led to wisdom, and the self-defensive factors are naturally activated. In contrast, in the regulatory states, because these psychodynamics are well grasped, the subjectivization  of object is not used even if the objectification of self is used. (When an individual is in an intense withdrawal, enen if the interlocking movements among the displeasing factors represented as "self-defensive factor→self-displeasing factor→object-displeasing factor" are generated, other interlocking movements among the displeasing factors represented as "object-displeasing factor→self-displeasing factor→self-defensive factor" are successively generated, and his/her mental state returns to a withdrawal. It is therefore necessary for him/her to activate the grandiose self by using the loop of help, the route of changing displeasure into pleasure, and so on.)

                                                                Ranking the natures of mind

Second level: The loop of help, The loop of forgiveness

The formation of help, in other words, an elimination of relative merits (superiority and inferiority) by the discovery of the weak object is required to cure withdrawal. In addition, the formation of forgiveness, in other words, relief to be forgiven and satisfaction of forgiving are required to cure destructive aggressions (so-called borderline personality disorders). During the radical psychoanalytic treatment of severe disturbed personality disorders (pathological states of the fragile system and pathological states of the aggressive system), help and/or forgiveness are most dramatically formed. This is also applied to the radical psychoanalytic treatment of psychoses (manic-depressive disorders and schizophrenia), in which, again, both, help and forgiveness are formed. The technique of developing a healthy mind is essential scientific work for humans, which is no less than scientific studies in various fields.

The loops of help and forgiveness form the basis of the human mind. Even if an individual is in the defensive states, he/she has at least one loop each, of help and forgiveness. Stable regulatory states require several loops of help and forgiveness. However, unless such regulatory states are attained, panic can occur anytime due to the stress. To explain this process, after attaining enlightenment, an individual does not stick to help and forgiveness. However, even if an individual attains enlightenment, he/she  needs to continue a social life, and uses help and forgiveness appropriately. An individual who has attained enlightenment can evaluate appropriately, and he/she can suspend help and forgiveness according to the circumstances.

Third level: Restraint with involvement (meddling), The route of changing displeasure into pleasure (conceit, taking a defiant attitude)

Dependency (weak self → ideal self → grandiose object) and expectation (ideal self → grandiose object) are representatives of involvement. The characteristic of the dependent type of pathological identification, which is used in dependency and expectation, is the nature of mind in which the perfect self tries to create the omnipotent object. When this nature of mind is accomplished, the narcissistic type of pathological identification (ideal self ← grandiose object) is used. When this nature of mind is not accomplished, displeasure is generated. This displeasure is dealt with by using restraint with involvement (grandiose object → weak object →grandiose self) or by sending displeasure to the aggressive system via the displeasure-dispatch route (grandiose object → bad object).

Restraint with involvement indicates the psychodynamics of meddling. At times, meddling is shunned, while at other times, it is considered acceptable. Meddling is shunned because, after an individual has an expectation towards the other person (depends on the other person) and is disappointed, he/she weakens the other person selfishly, and recovers only his/her own subjectivity. Some individuals frequently use this restraint with involvement and forget the loop of help.  Forgetting the loop of help indicates that he/she does not have respect for the other person especially because his/her idealized object cannot work. In contrast, meddling is acceptable when it is altruistic. This is represented by the spirit of hospitality, called "omotenashi" in Japanese. In this case, restraint with involvement, and apology with involvement (mentioned below), occur simultaneously, and the other person can use the narcissistic type of pathological identification. Therefore, this type of meddling is acceptable.

When dependency and expectation cannot be accomplished, displeasure is sent to the aggressive system via the displeasure-dispatch route. Thus, the activated bad object is restrained (regulated) by the rebellious self. If not, the activated bad object is defended by the punitive object. When the bad object is restrained by the rebellious self, rebellion with involvement, in other words, the nature of mind with a defiant attitude is generated. Subsequently, two more patterns of psychodynamics are generated. One is apology with involvement, which is generated in introspection after taking a defiant attitude, and the other is conceit, which is generated by the route of changing displeasure into pleasure. Further, to prevent the displeasure, which is sent to the aggressive system, from changing into fear (the punitive object) and murderous intent (the punitive self), forgiveness containing rebellion and apology is required, and it is essential to activate the grandiose self that enables to recover one's own subjectivity.

Fourth level: Being enraptured (captivated), Addiction, The self-reproach cycle (a sense of duty)

An individual identifies with the omnipotent grandiose object and tries to create the perfect ideal self. This work of mind entails "being enraptured" (captivated), and its psychodynamics are usually generated in the mental states when the formation of the loop of help is still poor (weak self→idealized object→weak object→grandiose self→weak self). In other words, because the weak object can be neither discovered nor restrained, the state of being enraptured (grandiose object→ideal self) occurs. In the defensive states where a single loop of help is formed, belief, creed, faith, and so on, are generated. The loop of help and being enraptured coexist in these mental states. In such a situation, in contrast to the perfect ideal self, the grandiose self continues growing. On the other hand, if plural loops of help are formed, being enraptured dwindles.

Being enraptured with transitional objects lead to addiction. The generating mechanism of transitional objects is described in detail in The Integration Theory of Psychoanalysis and Digest version of the Integration Theory of Psychoanalysis. The perfect ideal self indicates a comfortable self-image. Addiction shows the psychodynamics of pursuing tools to get pleasure by expanding objects, not only in persons, but in things as well. Various transitional objects, including favorite foods, are used for tools to form addiction. The natures of mind of being enraptured and addiction generally work in th area of hobby (where the ideal self pursuing pleasure and the grandiose self prescribing value of hobby work simultaneously). When destructive aggressions are added to addiction, dependencies are generated. Please refer to the two books mentioned above, for an explanation on these mechanisms.

We affirm sanctions (punishment) according to our social rules, and exhibit speech and behaviors against such rules. We are not usually aware of our rules, but, for example, when we are exhausted and out of sorts, our need to care about our rules takes precedence, and we have an eager appetite for skipping work and being lazy. However, despite such an intention, we try hard to play our part. This refers to duty. The neural transmission that makes us perform our duty is the self-reproach cycle (punitive object→ideal self). It is necessary to activate the apologetic self which is the foundation of patience (frustration tolerance), to keep the self-reproach cycle functioning. When the apologetic self is poorly activated, displeasure, which has been sent into the aggressive system, activates not only the punitive object but also the punitive self, and the displeasure-return route is activated. This interferes with the performance of duty.

                                                                Ranking the natures of mind

Fifth level: Manic defense, Stereotypical obsession

Talking while smiling, in an unpleasant situation, typifies manic defense. (punitive self + ideal self). The others are impressed by the person's unnatural behavior. Manic defense is the psychodynamic that holds back the displeasure-return route (into the fragile system) at the point of the ideal self. Whenever an individual uses manic defense, his/her personal relationships are not destructive, but are charged with a slight tension. Manic  defense is not manic states. In the former, even when manic defense is used, the apologetic self is simultaneously activated, and frustration tolerance is maintained. In contrast, in manic states, frustration tolerance sometimes deteriorates.

Stereotypical obsession is one of four types of obsession. This psycho-dynamic holds back the destructive aggressions at the point of the ideal self by using the self-reproach cycle, because the destructive aggressions enter the fragile system through the displeasure-return route. Stereotypical obsessions are often observed in our daily life. For example, they include favorite phrases, manners, ceremonies, and so on. A stereotypical obsession comprises extremely familiar symptom clusters. However, individuals are rarely aware of the stereotypical obsession. Mysophobia is one of the most typical stereotypical obsessions. An individual with mysophobia is not satisfied unless he/she consistently cleans (cleanses) himself/herself and his/her environment (in contrast, the behavior that forces others to keep clean indicates an obsession with involvement). However, the level of disorders is not decided only by the condition with stereotypical obsession. When the regulation systems in both of the fragile and aggressive systems have been formed despite stereotypical obsession, it indicates that an individual is in the defensive states.

Sixth level: Envy, Jealousy

There are two types of envy, namely, benign and malignant envy. In benign envy, the destructive aggressions invade into the fragile system and put the target of attack on the idealized object. In contrast, in malignant envy, the destructive aggressions, through the displeasure-return route, consider the grandiose object as the target of attack. Thus, the object that is enraptured is the target of benign envy, and on the other hand, rich persons and celebrities are the target of malignant envy. Envy is easily noticed because of its simple psychodynamics. As the destructive aggressions strengthen, the psychodynamics do not remain at benign envy, and develop the complicating consequences mentioned below.

The psychodynamics of jealousy exceed those of malignant envy.  In jealousy, the destructive aggressions consider both, the grandiose object and its divided object as the target of attack (see The Integration Theory of Psychoanalysis and Digest version of the Integration Theory of Psychoanalysis, for the generating mechanism of the divided object). Jealousy is the psychodynamic of bullying. The bullied person is the weak object, and originally, the weak object should be found in the grandiose object. However, when the weak object cannot be found in the grandiose object, the divided object is generated, and then bullying occurs through jealousy (the malignant cycle).

                                                                  Ranking the natures of mind

Seventh level: Avoidance, Antisociality

After the displeasure-return route is activated, the destructive aggressions diverge at the point of the ideal self. Here, the natural circulation in the fragile system (ideal self→weak self→idealized object→weak object), collides with another divergent neural transmission (ideal self→grandiose object→weak object) at the point of the weak object. They are restrained by the grandiose self. These are the psychodynamics of avoidance, which are generated when the aggressive regulation system works poorly. Generally, the destructive aggressions should be managed by frustration tolerance and the route of changing displeasure into pleasure. However, if it is difficult for an individual to manage the destructive aggressions, he/she cannot accomplish self-responsibility. In other words, avoidance corresponds to abdication of responsibility.

The destructive aggressions through the displeasure-return route get to the ideal self, and diverge. Here, the natural circulation in the fragile system, collides with another divergent neural transmission at the point of the grandiose object. They run via the weak object, and are restrained by the grandiose self. These are the psychodynamics of antisociality, which are generated when the aggressive regulation system works poorly. Although the destructive aggressions should be managed by frustration tolerance and the route of changing displeasure into pleasure, due to the difficulty in the same, they are usually managed by using avoidance. However, as the destructive aggressions frequently invade into the aggressive system, neural transmission which have diverged at the point of the ideal self also collide with each other at the point of the grandiose object, and the grandiose self is activated with object-dissociation (grandiose object→weak object). This series of neural transmissions refers to trimming the power of the grandiose object. This is the psychodynamics of lying, theft, and cheat.

                                                                 Ranking the natures of mind

Eighth level: Perversive thinking (despair and depression), The despair cycle (pity)

The psychodynamic of denial is used in perversive thinking. The neural transmissions of denial are represented as "ideal self←grandiose object←weak object." As mentioned in the psychodynamics of jealousy, the destructive aggressions attack the weak object by using the neural transmissions represented as "punitive self→ideal self→grandiose object→weak object." As a result, the weak object changes into the "injured divided object." Perversive thinking is the denial that is rooted in the injured divided object. This is the psycho-dynamics of despair. The degree of despair depends on the formation of the loop of help. For example, because borderline personality disorders have already held the loop of help, their despair is not so serious. However, in contrast, because schizoid personality disorders lack the loop of help, their despair is quite serious.

Depression is based on despair. It has the following two neural transmissions: "ideal self←grandiose object←injured divided object," and "ideal self←punitive object←bad object←grandiose object←injured divided object." However, the degree of despair is not necessarily proportional to that of  the depression. According to the power of the punitive object, depression becomes serious when the loop of forgiveness is not formed, despite the formation of the loop of help. Thus, considering the groups of disorders mentioned above as an example, because borderline personality disorders do not have the loop of forgiveness, their despair is not as serious as their depression. In contrast, as schizoid personality disorders have already formed the loop of forgiveness, their despair is serious, but their depression is not.

Despair forms the psychodynamics of the denial originating in the injured divided object, and pity that originates in the despair cycle. The despair cycle is based on the premonitory type of the closed cycle in the fragile system; its neural transmissions are represented as "weak object→weak self→ideal self→grandiose object→weak object." Here, not only is the weak object injured by the destructive aggressions, but also is the weak self. The neural transmissions in these cases are represented as follows: "punitive self→ideal self→grandiose object→weak object," and "punitive self→ideal self→weak self." According to these neural transmissions, the weak object changes into the "injured divided object," and the weak self changes into the "injured fragmented self." Thus, when both the weak object and the weak self are injured, the premonitory type of the closed cycle in the fragile system is formed again. Its neural transmissions are represented as "injured divided object→injured fragmented self→ideal self→grandiose object→injured divided object." This is the psychodynamics of pity.

                                                                  Ranking the natures of mind

Ninth level: The swirl type of the closed cycle

When an expectation is not satisfied, and disappointment cannot be managed by the aggressive system, the destructive aggressions invade into the fragile system via the displeasure-return route. Subsequently, if the grandiose self is activated, avoidance and antisociality usually work. However, if not, despair, depression, and various dependencies are caused. Perversive thinking forms despair and depression, and the swirl type of the closed cycle forms various dependencies. The swirl type of the closed cycle is formed with many constitution factors in the emotional system. Its neural transmissions are represented as "ideal self→grandiose object→bad object→punitive object→punitive self→ideal self→weak self→idealized object→weak object→grandiose object→ideal self."

Depending on whether the aggressions are managed in the aggressive system or not, the addictions are distinguished from the dependencies. Addiction is the psychodynamic limited to in the fragile system. In contrast, even if the loop of forgiveness has been formed, when this loop works poorly, dependencies are caused. Various dependencies are generated on all levels of disorders like despair and depression. The natural circulation in the fragile system needs the activation of the idealized object which is the object regulatory factor. When the grandiose self, which is formed identifying with the idealized object, has poor power, direct restraint of the weak object is hardly performed. In such a situation, the narcissistic type of the closed cycle, which constitutes the latter half of the swirl type of the closed cycle, might be formed in psychoses that cannot still form the restraint with involvement and the loop of help.

                                                              Ranking the natures of mind

Tenth level: Harming self or object

When both the aggressive and the fragile regulation systems cannot work, the malignant cycle occurs. Its neural transmissions are represented as follows: "ideal self→grandiose object→bad object→punitive object→punitive self→ideal self." As this malignant cycle progresses, the destructive aggressions increase. In addition, the destructive aggressions come to put the target of attack on the weak self, the grandiose object, or the weak object. In other words, harming self or object is generated. Further, the degree of harming self, ranging from suicide wish to real suicide, and the degree of harming object, ranging from slight violence to bloodshed, depend on the frequency of progression of the malignant cycle. Harming self or object also appears on all levels of disorders.
